Mondays, every week, let's celebrate ourselves, to start the week right. Tell me what you're proud of. Tell me what you accomplished last week, something -- at least one thing -- that you can turn around and point at and say: I did this. Me. It was tough, but I did it, and I did it well, and I am proud of it, and it makes me feel good to see what I accomplished. Could be anything -- something you made, something you did, something you got through. Just take a minute and celebrate yourself. Either here, or in your journal, but somewhere.
(And if you feel uncomfortable doing this in public, I've set this entry to screen any anonymous comments, so if you want privacy, comment anonymously and I won't unscreen it unless you tell me it's okay. Also: yes, by all means, cheer each other on when you see something you want to give props to!)On Dreamwidth: comments | comment (OpenID)Tags: pride thread

Rec Category: John Sheppard & Rodney McKay friendship Pairing: none Category: hurt/comfort, SG1/SGA crossover, John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Daniel Jackson Warning: aftermath of non-graphic torture and abuse Author on LJ: kriadydragonAuthor's Website: Fanfic ArchiveLink: FortunateWhy This Must Be Read: Rodney's on Earth when a frightened, injured and possibly insane Sheppard turns up at his doorstep, with a seemingly unbelievable story of conspiracy involving the SGC. Unsure who to trust, Rodney turns to Daniel for help. This story has a great dynamic between all three men. I still have a big soft spot for Daniel going back to the early days of SG1, and he's just the right blend of sympathetic, snarky and skeptical. This was written circa SGA season four, so Rodney and Daniel had not yet interacted (much) in canon, but I really like their verbal sparring as depicted here -- they're not really friends yet, but they're taking the first cautious steps towards it. And Rodney's blend of worry and wariness towards Sheppard is pitch-perfect, as he struggles to unravel the truth, caught between his rational mind's insistence that Sheppard must be insane, and the irrational urge to take a leap of faith to help his friend.

I'm being crushed beneath the boulders of a work deadline, but I wanted to ask this before it utterly faded in my memory. A few weeks ago I was in bed, I think around 1:30 am or so; and I came upon an anime that intrigued me. I had no idea where we were in the story, or indeed what the story was, but there may have been two brothers involved. (Not Full Metal Alchemist -- that one I know.) I think this episode took place in some city or town in Vietnam, though I must warn you not to trust any of my details -- I wasn't clear on what was going on, and was sleepy to boot. The brothers were staying at a sort of charity school for some reason -- I had the impression they were passing through, but I could be wrong. There was a penniless girl at the school with a sad history -- her older brother had lost an arm or possibly been killed in front of her by a mine in their fields. At night this girl would be drawn outside through some unnatural means, and men belonging to a mysterious organization would observe her through binoculars. The younger brother could hear something no one else could hear, and when it woke him he would go outside with her. Later we learn something's happened to the girl's parents, so she returns to her home to take care of the rest of the family. She asks the younger brother to give her a metal detector as a gift, and he does. Later he's told she asked for the metal detector because she was going to use it to find unexploded mines and sell them to support her family, and the boy's horrified he assisted in this. I have no idea where any of this was going, but what struck me were the beautifully observed moments; the girl playing the piano one afternoon while it was raining, and how the "camera" moved through this town, from image to image: a wagon left outside, rain falling around it, and a cat underneath waiting patiently for the rain to stop; a young woman standing under an awning; that sort of thing. When I checked my programming guide it claimed this was a series called Inuyasha; and perhaps it is, but it doesn't seem to match the descriptions I've read of that show. Can anyone identify this, and tell me where to find it? Tags: anime

I devoted a good deal of the weekend to reading Stephen King's "Under the Dome." I just gave up about two-thirds of the way through Episode 2 of "V". Thus, I have stood, like Ruth, amid the Alien Corn. Spoilers within... ( Read more... )I am now almost half-way through reviewing Chapter 26 (of 28) of the latest iteration of The Lawyer's Desk Book. Chapter 26 is the longest chapter. It's 168 printed pages long. On page 2, the compositor omitted a 17-line footnote. They'll probably just make it Footnote 4A, but theoretically, that means that 634 footnotes are mis-numbered. Well, I guess finding that sort of repays the time spent checking over the galleys, eh? Speaking of massive tomes, I have a copy of Gourmet Today, the hugeous cookbook that is now a bit Cheshire-y (cookbook w/out magazine = grin without a cat?) which reminds me that the tiny cakes of spiced tofu, produced by pressing the curd under a heavy weight, are called Doufu Gan. This weekend was the Fall Craft Festival at Canterbury Park, and I spent three hours walking around it with my craft-fair buddy K. At one point I turned to her and said, "This is one of my favorite places to be in the world." "I feel the same way!" she said, and we had one of those moments when you feel perfectly in tune with another person and with the world. I look forward to this craft fair so much. It's huge and sprawling, and the smell and feel of it is so immersive: mini donuts, potpourri, blown-out candles, live music, and people of all ages strolling around, looking at a mishmash of kitsch and really fine art. It's held twice a year, in the fall and the spring, so I only have to wait till April for the next one. I don't often actually buy anything, but this time I took home a handmade rug in shades of blue and beige, which is now covering the spot where the carpet was bubbling up in the hallway outside our bathroom. It pleases me every time I walk over it. The weather has been so weird in the Twin Cities: October was freezing, winter-jacket weather, and November has so far been balmy. A couple days were even no-jacket warm. I am more than ready for SNOW, though most people with whom I share this opinion do not agree. Daylight Saving Time kicked my butt this year, and my body is just now adjusting. My son and husband both getting the flu might have had something to do with my exhaustion, though, and I'm extremely busy at work right now as well. November is the beginning of the super-frantic part of my year, which runs through early April, and though I'm glad the summer months tend to be a little lighter, it's always hard to be dealing with the winter holidays plus a giant workload. But I'm grateful to be employed, and I do actually like my job, so I try to keep the kvetching to a minimum. Too many of my friends and acquaintances are unemployed or underemployed, and I've been there myself, so I know how good I have it right now. Tonight my son asked, "Mommy, would you like to be in my secret club with the mouse and the two bears? It meets every night except for Tuesdays." I said I would love to. x. Won almost $100 at the casino on Saturday! x. Got a futon for my office for $75 from Craigs List. It's from the store (Norka) where I wanted to purchase one, but the store is super expensive ($300-$500 for a futon) . Paid for it with my casino winnings. \o/ I call this a win. x. Finally feeling like myself again. Man, that flu fucked me up for a while. So glad I feel human after all this time. x. Only two more bio classes! I have a presentation to do for class this week, then my final two weeks from then. x. Probably heading to Cali in the spring, but I think I really want to hit Florida again before the end of the year to visit my brother's family. x. Am listening to a random playlist of Tori Amos, which takes me back. Ah, late-teens, early-twenties, how you sucked so much ass, but you got me where I am today, so I suppose I shouldn't wish you away. This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth. 1) Dear grav_ity, thank you ( for making my day. )2) Dear innerslytherin and severity_softly, thank you SO MUCH for starting cmrossiprentiss. 3) How did I make it to my current ripe old age without knowing that this existed? 4) I have been cooking! If you want a phenomenal (but v. rich) dish for the holidays and like mushrooms, I HIGHLY recommend this recipe. If could probably be made as a more everyday dish by judicious substitution of milk and smart balance, but made as is, it is very decadent and very yummy 5) As You Like it is at the Shakespeare Theater, and The Screwtape Letters are coming. EEEE! 6) Possibly I have jury duty on Tuesday. This could be interesting. 7) Hi! How are you? 8) OMG I FORGOT THAT THERE IS WHO TO BE WATCHED. I AM SO BEHIND ON THE INTERNETS.

Tea with youkosiren! Bookshopping with her and Pru, then the strongest hot chocolate in the world, then more books (also kittens!). I met merelyn and leupagus who are both amazing in the most retarded ways. I can’t even talk about it. Actual stuff when I get back to Toronto and have slept off the high of hanging out with Pru, who is awesome in ways I can’t explain and who is fattening me up, Fat Princess style so I won’t return to Canada. Pru: (in the other room) OH GOD, LACTATION, WHY. There is so much other stuff to write! Why, guys? WHY. ( Links )Pru: Oh, Jim Kirk. Why are you always doing the alien equivalent of poking holes in the condoms? MK: He is obsessed with sperm. Pru: Jim Kirk just wants things. MK: Someone should write a story where he runs a fertility clinic but can’t get pregnant himself. Pru: Hold up a second, let’s think about this for a minute. Why Pru and I should probably not be allowed to hang out in the same room for an extended period of time. Also, we are amazing. ( Fic Recs: Star Trek TOR, Merlin, White Collar )MK: Whenever I see a post on my flist from ncis_finders, I weep. PRU: i don’t know why you subscribe to that other than that you probably like pain MK: Well this time I held back from clicking on things PRU: that’s a start MK: but when the internet is low on fic for me to read, that’s usually when someone posts something to ncis_finders like “I’m looking for that story where Gibbs ties Tony to the boat in his basement and whips him with a bag of soap bars so it won’t leave a mark. And then he bites giant hickies all over him so people will know who he belongs to. Anyone?????” PRU: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT PRU: WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTTTTT PRU: s;dlfksdfsldkfjsd;aiew;jdskf MK: I made it up PRU: EMILY PRU: OH THANK GOD Tags: conversations, fic recs, links, merlin, ncis, star trek, video games, white collar

Last crossover rec from me this month... Title: Playing for Keeps Till the End of Time by Lacey McBain Pairing: Castiel/Dean Author on LJ: laceymcbainAuthor Website: Stickyman PressWhy this must be read: This is an example of what a good fusion should be. Lacey has brought the Supernatural characters into the Highlander 'verse, giving them roles that fit the Highlander world without losing what makes them Supernatural characters. While Dean is not a Hunter and Castiel is not an Angel, Lacey keeps them in character, using SPN characters for conflicts that are recognizably SPN conflicts even if they're cloaked in the Highlander mystique. Castiel takes over from Methos as the oldest Immortal who "watches" himself. Dean is a former Marine who is in town after the death of his brother Sam, a Watcher (though he's not aware of this.) He falls into the company of Castiel and through that, adventure and further drama unwinds. You don't really need to know anything about SPN in order to enjoy it, though it will probably enhance your enjoyment since you'll understand the various tensions between the characters, but Lacey does a pretty good job of making it enjoyable for fans of both series.
