Eeee, Yuletide madness stories are up! More stooooooooooooooooooooories. And awesome stories they are, too. I received five (???????!!!!!!), and all of them manage to convey quite a bit in a short space. Four of them are more American Gods stories, and seriously, I've been loving the results so much that I may put this down as one of my prompts next year as well. A Light Across the Sea is a lyrical, light-filled, gorgeous piece of prose about Brighid: "She comes to the New World a saint, and becomes a goddess once more." Small g is Dumuzi, a Sumerian grain god, in understated, stately prose: "I waved the barkeep over and indicated another round. Something golden, old but with a taste of sun. The man glanced over, and inclined his head, accepting the offering. He seemed, in that moment, regal." Eris Discordia has sharp edges and a fast pace and a killer last line: "She was brought ashore in dusty, leather bound books, stuffy academic journals and in the minds of stuffier professors. She might have come more quickly if it hadn't been for the ship wrecks, the boxes dropped into harbours, the professors lost in the pleasures of the port, but discord was in her nature. Discord was her nature." and Coming to America: Venus is Venus seen through ordinary eyes in an ordinary encounter, deceptively simple: "The tattoo hurts worse than having your teeth pulled. The woman takes Zeke's free hand and squeezes it. He whispers to her about the sea voyage, about how the pay'll be enough for a farm with room for kids, and about how scared he is. She smiles and says it'll be all right." The fifth gift I got was for Ellen Emerson White's The President's Daughter series: The Importance of Season Tickets--the title made me grin like a loon, as did the story, which puts Meg and Preston in the future, on the cusp of something, and (of COURSE) at a Red Sox game. :hand-flailing delight: Have I mentioned lately that fandom is awesome? Because yes. Yes, it is. Tags: yuletide

EDIT: I don't think this entry really contains any spoilers, but read at your own discretion. Let me just say, though, it was gay. Gay gay gay gay gay.
Oh my god, I'm supposed to be packing for an upcoming trip to China but I just have to get this off my chest--I saw Sherlock Holmes today, and it is like a Holmes/Watson birthday present to me from the powers that be.
The bickering over custody of the dog, "My dog!" "Our dog!" "My dog!" Holmes' open sabotage of Watson's relationships! Holmes trying to keep Watson from leaving him through all manner of ridiculous stunts! Holmes being bitchy to Mary! Mary saying Holmes cares as much about Watson as she does! The flirting! The open affection! Holmes joking about marrying Watson! Scrabbling at his pockets! Sharing clothes! Bickering about who left the stove on like an old married couple!
The entire time I sat with my heart in my throat, waiting for the moment it all came crashing down--and it never did! I went in thinking, "Oh well, they'll probably play down the gay, throw in some smokescreens, keep them from having too much screen time together, but hey, Jude Law!" I-I did not expect them to play UP the gay and have Holmes flirting with Watson every few minutes or angsting about Watson leaving him.
(Just saw that Downey implied that Holmes and Watson might be gay. Haha! Where are my promised wrestling and sharing-a-bed scenes, though?)
P.S. If anyone knows where the Sherlock Holmes movie fandom is congregating, please let me know! I'm stuck in China for a month, and I'm gonna be completely miserable.

I'm falling in love with the bookmarks/recs function over at AO3 today! But for now: Vorkosigan, Band of Brothers, The Breakfast Club, Dracula, Lord Peter Wimsey, Spy Game, Rio Bravo, Leverage, White Collar, Adventure Inc., Sports Night, Gunmen, Anne of Green Gables, and Aliens. I. Day 14 → A non-fictional book1. Currently I'm reading Emerson: the Mind on Fire, by Robert Richardson. What a crazy thorough biography. The author is so focused on the intellectual influences that I feel like I've read every book Emerson's read. It gives me great comfort to realize that Emerson didn't start on the path to becoming, you know, The Man, until he was 28. LIKE ME, YES, EMERSON AND I ARE OBVIOUSLY SOUL SISTERS. 2. I quite like Generation Kill, although it's more interesting to read it side-by-side with One Bullet Away, by Nate Fick. For my money, however, the Iraq war book I'd rather read is Love My Rifle More Than You, by Kayla Williams. I didn't want to read something so similar to my own experience, but when I was forced to read it I enjoyed it both more and less. More because she's funny and poignant without being at all sappy, and less because I cried practically through the whole thing (it's not sad-- vertigo and uncontrollable weeping are apparently my version of PTSD, and the book hit very close to home). There are some things I didn't particularly like-- you can tell, for example, that she has serious issues with other women in charge of her, and she's definitely a part of the problem herself in some ways, the way almost all women in the military have to be to survive. But she really gets into exactly how fucked up the military is with regard to women, sexual harassment and outright assault, and quite a few other things. It's infuriating because it's the truth. So if you read it-- and I do recommend it, it was pretty good-- be prepared to become very angry. 3. The Fat Fallacy, by Dr. Will Clower. I hate diets, diet books, and any kind of food discussion other than MMM THIS IS DELICIOUS. This is not a diet book. This is a book about what is really in your food and why you should stop eating processed crap. It also promotes wine and cheese and dark chocolate, each of which I am a fan. I read it in 2003, although I think it came out quite a while ago, and in the last few years there have been numerous books that have come out supporting everything he's said. So if you ever get a sudden hankering to change your eating habits, I'd pick up this even before I'd pick up anything by Michael Pollan or that crew, although I really like his stuff as well. II. Mr. B and I spent our day being sick and lazy, respectively. This morning there were waffles (slightly crispy, resembling cookies in some respects actually, but waffles all the same) and NewsRadio. We did venture out on a shopping excursion at one point. I bought one of my friends season 1 of Veronica Mars, and then spent all the rest of my money on, uh, myself. I got an Elmer Fudd hat (do not judge, okay, it is very very cold here most of the time) and Peppermint Nog. No reasonable person should have to live without Peppermint Nog. This evening it was veggie lasagna and Doctor Who, and dear god, it's not even 11pm and Mr. B is asleep and I am nearly there. LAME. WE ARE YOUNG AND HAVE NO CHILDREN, WHY ARE WE NOT OUT LIVING IT UP PEOPLE? This might have to be my New Year's resolution, y'all: to do stuff. There will be time for knitting in front of BBC America and going to sleep before midnight on a Saturday when I'm actually physically old instead of just mentally old. III. Hee, Fandom Secret #136! I'm not the only one who will feel betrayed by the universe if Colin Morgan and Bradley James are not really in love with each other. Actually, part of me hopes they're not in a relationship at the moment, because they're so young that the odds of them breaking up would be quite high, especially since it kind of seems like Colin Morgan is a workaholic and Bradley James is like pah relationships, my mates are better. No, I haven't given this any thought at all, why do you ask? All right. To bed with First Among Sequels, Mr. B snoring away next to me, and Sophie tucked into her dog bed with her blankie. Zzzzz. Fandoms include: David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Amanda Palmer - The Astronaut, Kill Bill, Hunger Games, Like Water for Chocolate, Oregon Trail, The Dark Tower, Inuit mythology, fairy tales, the Silmarillion, Sandman, Slings & Arrows, Peep ShowKimono Dreams - David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (album) This was my request - it was my long-shot why the hell not request and i'm so glad it happened. I didn't give much, if any, direction; I figured if someone was going to offer this they'd have their own vision. The story is dark and Ziggy is frightening and beautiful. The language is very immediate and full of brilliant imagery. I am so pleased to have received this, it really is an amazing gift. The words run together like magic, take flight, sound drum beat chords through skin too young to have learned all that glitters is not gold.( the rest are behind the cut )Tags: recs, yuletide2009

I haven't been reading in any sort of order, but here are some Yuletide fics that have struck my fancy (and managed to bookmark when the archive wasn't being cranky): To begin with, my brilliant, wonderful gifts: Bridgerton series - QuinnChase the Glowing Hours - Five dances between Colin and Penelope, from their early friendship to their marriage. This reads like something straight out of Romancing Mister Bridgerton; the voices are fantastic. MendolMy love, she is nothing (she's only everything) - It's a shame that more people haven't read this fic. It doesn't have the kinky crack of the series, but makes Nami and Ray real, and warm, and human. And onto other people's gifts! ( Legally Blonde, Leverage, Nodame Cantabile (TV), I Am Maru, Inspector Chen series - Williams, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Yankee-kun to Megane-chan )Tags: recs, yuletide2009
